Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has hinted at the future of protagonist Walter White in the fifth and final season of the show.

Last season's finale saw the character, played by Bryan Cranston, poison a child to manipulate Jesse (Aaron Paul) into helping him take down Gus (Giancarlo Esposito).

However, Gilligan said that even though Gus has been taken care of, Walt will continue down the "dark path" he is on.

"We are essentially taking a good guy protagonist and turning him into a bad guy," he told TV Line. "Walter White still has a little further to go down that dark path that he's very wilfully put himself on."

Gilligan added: "We are following the same thread that we've been following for four seasons now."

When the executive producer was asked how the AMC drama would replace Gus, Gilligan further teased: "Hopefully, we fill [the void left by Gus] with Walter White and a few other characters, perhaps.

"It'll be different, but hopefully just as interesting."

Breaking Bad returns for 16 final episodes later this year.
