Season 1, episode 9 | Aired Friday, Dec 9 2011 at 9:44pm EST on

This week's Person of Interest sheds a little light on Carter (Taraji P Henson). Back in 2004, the police detective was part of the US army and we see her grill terrorist suspect Yusef. In the present day, Carter's dealing with a more domestic threat - abused wife Mrs Kovach, who is frequently beaten by her brutish husband Edward.

Carter's also keeping one eye on the Elias case. She visits the villain's jailed mobster father Don Moretti and he warns her that Elias will come after her if she keeps digging...

Meanwhile, a young man named Ronnie Middleton is shot dead - he was a one-time witness in a case against local gangster Hector Alvarez. Carter suspects that local store-owner Castillo may have witnessed the crime, but he's nervous about being seen talking to the cops.

Reese is also at the scene and receives some disturbing news from Finch - the latest Person of Interest is Detective Carter herself. While Carter has breakfast with her teen son Taylor in cafe, Reese remotely clones her cell phone and Finch plants a hidden camera and GPS tracker in her car.

Carter visits Hector's garage and warns the hood that she'll nail him for the Middleton shooting. Finch has now narrowed down the list of suspects who could be targeting the lady cop - it includes Hector, Edward Kovach and, of course, Elias...

Next, Carter meets with her CI - nicknamed 'Bottlecap' - and he agrees to ask around about Hector and Elias. Meanwhile, at Reese's request, Fusco reaches out to one of his old cop colleagues - a corrupt police captain. He confirms that a hit has been taken out on Carter - "She's gunning for Elias - she's gotta go!"

But Reese follows Carter to a bar, where she confronts Edward Kovach about his spousal abuse. Kovach doesn't take well to her words of warning, and Reese tells Finch: "I think we've got a new frontrunner."

In a second flashback to 2004, Carter questions Yusef about his links to Al Qaeda. She wants to know where a batch of explosive vests have been stashed, but Yusef fears for his family's safety if he talks...

Back in 2011, Reese strikes a blow against Hector's operation. Blowing open his garage with a grenade launcher - yes, really - Reese snatches up a ton of the gangster's weapons and warns his goons: "Tell Hector I'm the guy that just put him out of business!"

Seven years previous, Carter promises to protect Yusef and his family - he's moved when she reveals that she too has a young son and agrees to take her to where the explosive vests are located "for our children".

In the present, Bottlecap has information for Carter and Fusco - Hector has been cheating on his girlfriend with an 'exotic dancer'. When Carter exposes the affair, Hector's beau gives up his current location - a warehouse in Queens.

Preparing to mobilise, Carter receives a desperate phone call from Mrs Kovach. But by the time she arrives at the Kovach home, thuggish Edward has already been beaten and trussed up. It seems that Reese has already been on the scene and he calls Carter, warning the detective that her life is in danger...

And indeed it is. Super-villain Elias sneaks into the cop precinct in disguise, leaving a bouquet of flowers and a note: "Deepest regrets on the loss of Detective Carter."

Carter leads an ESU unit to Hector's warehouse, with Reese secretly going undercover as one of the team to keep her safe. The cops raid the building, but Hector escapes out the back and into a vehicle. Carter pursues the crook on foot and opens fire, taking him into custody. It seems that she didn't need Reese's help to take down Hector...

Now both Hector and Kovach have been neutralised, but Reese manages to lose Carter on a busy street. She meets with Bottlecap in a back alley, but his life has been threatened by Elias and he turns on Carter, shooting her twice in the chest...

In our final visit to 2004, the explosive vests are found and safely detonated - Yusef's information was good. But the corrupt soldiers on Carter's team killed the man they call a "rag-head" regardless. When a devastated Carter objects, a fellow soldier tells her: "It's a long war - and you're all alone!"

In 2011, Reese arrives to save Carter - shooting Bottlecap dead - and the female detective has survived the attack, thanks to a kevlar vest. As she recovers, Reese lurks in the shadows, telling his sometime-ally: "Whether you like me or not... you're not alone."

Reese's final act is to confront Fusco's corrupt former captain. "Elias can't kill a cop without permission," he snarls. "Permission's been revoked!" With the crisis over, Carter is safe to return to her son...

Points of Interest
Person of Interest returns from a two-week break with another strong episode. We've complained in the past about the lack of character development afforded to Detective Carter - Taraji P Henson has felt wasted in previous weeks - so it's fantastic to see her take centre stage here.
• Indeed, Carter is essentially the show's lead this week - Reese appears in far fewer scenes than usual, while Finch is an even smaller presence.
• In addition to simply giving Henson more screen-time, the show also fleshes out Carter by giving her a teenage son, a dark past and even a first name!
• More Carter also means more of her partner Fusco (Kevin Chapman). While the character grated a little in earlier episodes, he's becoming far more likeable as he moves away from his corrupt past and becomes more of an ally - albeit a slightly unwilling one - to Reese and Finch.
This week's absurdly cool Reese moment - Since Reese takes a backseat, so does the extreme action for the most part. But his assault on Hector's garage - armed with a grenade launcher and machine gun - is absolutely immense.
