Season 1, episode 10 | Aired Friday, Dec 16 2011 at 9:46pm EST on

Reese and Finch are baffled when the machine spits out four new numbers - college lecturer Claire Ryan, waiter Matt Duggan, hairstylist Wendy McNally and unemployed Paula Vasquez. Finch suggests that a number cluster suggests a connection between the persons of interest...

Carter has been relegated to desk duty as Internal Affairs launches an inquiry into Bottlecap's death. But a new figure at the precinct - Snow - is asking questions about Reese...

Speaking of, Reese arrives at Claire Ryan's apartment to find her tortured to death. But her home is full of new purchases - it seems that Claire had gone on a spending spree. Reese decides to turn his attentions to Wendy McNally, recruiting Fusco to follow Paula Vasquez while Finch tracks Matt Duggan.

Fusco keeps an eye on Paula as instructed and spots her buying a gun, but she spots the bungling cop and is able to give him the slip. Meanwhile, Finch observes Matt as he quits his waiter's job and splashes out on a flash new motorcycle - he's spending big, just like Claire did...

But Matt's own spending spree doesn't last long - he's killed when a bomb detonates next to his car. Finch searches for a connection between the two victims, tracking their cell phone signals. He notices that Claire, Matt and Wendy were all briefly in the same place the night before - Roosevelt Drive at 11.57pm. Wendy has gone missing and since Paula's now armed, Reese suspects that she may be the killer!

At the precinct the following day, Carter and Fusco's own investigation turns up the fact that Claire and Matt's prints were both found on a crashed vehicle on Roosevelt Drive two nights before. "They're both at the crash, they both get money, they both get dead," notes Carter...

It's revealed that Jamie Hallam - the son of noted congressman Jim Hallam - was driving the wrecked car and died in the incident. His body was also found with a large stash of cocaine...

When Fusco questions Congressman Hallam about his son's death, the politician explains that Jamie had been at a party thrown by corrupt banker Davis Bannerman just hours before his accident.

Reese tracks Wendy to her mother's house, but is surprised to see her embrace Paula Vasquez - now revealed to be Wendy's foster sister. An assassin - Dane - arrives at the house to to take the two women out, and though Reese is able to fight him off, Dane and a second hitman both escape...

In the panic, Wendy and Paula have fled, but Finch tells Reese that the girls' foster mother Susan McNally is currently in hospital with a broken hip. But Susan's home is the real problem - the banks were foreclosing on her, so Wendy and Paula took Jamie's money to pay off the debt.

Meanwhile, Carter is intercepted by the mysterious Snow - an agent for the CIA. Snow explains that he worked alongside Reese and claims that they used to be friends, but reveals that Reese disappeared, after apparently killing his CIA handler Claire Stanton...

Fusco is busy questioning banker Davis Bannerman, but becomes suspicious when his story about Jamie matches Congressman Hallam's almost to the letter. Could the two men be in cahoots? Sure enough, Finch discovers that, prior to his accident, Jamie was due to board a flight to the Cayman's, on a private jet owned by Bannerman…

Reese finds Wendy visiting her mother in hospital - Paula is elsewhere, fetching some food. Wendy finally reveals the truth about Jamie's crash - she, Paula, Claire and Matt stumbled upon the wreckage and found Jamie dead, covered in coke. He also had a briefcase with a million bucks inside, so the foursome decided to divvy up the cash...

But now someone wants the money back - Dane the assassin and his accomplice snatch up Paula, then call Wendy and demand that she hand over the $500 grand in her possession.

Meanwhile, Finch listens in as Congressman Hallam and Davis Bannerman discuss their scheme over the phone - the pair were using a charity for Haitian Orphans as a front for cleaning dirty money and Jamie was their middle-man. Finch records the conversation - Hallam and Bannerman are in trouble...

But the CIA are still closing in on Reese. Finch has been observing Carter and overhears her call to the CIA. But he's too late - Carter and Snow confront Reese and, seconds later, a CIA sniper's bullet hits Reese in the gut...

Returning fire, Reese is able to escape, but he's badly wounded. Finch races towards Reese's location, but our hero is in a bad way and Carter is following his blood-trail...

Finch arrives to rescue the injured Reese, but Carter catches the two men in the act. With the CIA closing in, Carter makes an instinctive decision and allows Reese and Finch to escape...

Points of Interest
• 'Number Crunch' starts out as a fairly standard PoI episode, but eventually develops into a fine midseason finale. We learn a little about Reese's past, meet the enigmatic Snow and Carter finally meets her quarry (and Finch too) face-to-face!
• We're also left on a cracking cliffhanger, as the seemingly invincible Reese is badly injured and has to be rescued by his partner-in-fighting-crime...
• CIA agent Snow is an intriguing character - we hope to see more of him and maybe learn some juicy details about his shared past with Reese. Michael Kelly, who plays the role, is a fine character actor and we're always thrilled to see him on television!
• We first met CIA handler Claire Stanton (Annie Parisse) - the lady who gave 'Reese' his alias - back in the episode 'Foe'. Now it's suggested that Reese may have killed her - was Snow telling the truth?
• A slight criticism - after all the build-up surrounding arch-villain Elias (Enrico Colantoni), it's a shame that he doesn't make at least a brief appearance in the final Person of Interest instalment for 2011.
