The English actor - who plays Daniel Grayson on the ABC drama - told journalists that he had "no idea" the series would prove so popular.
"You film the pilot and you don't know if that pilot's even going to be picked up," he explained.
"We were very much an underdog to Charlie's Angels, Pan Am, The Playboy Club - and they're all gone, they're all finished!"
He continued: "On paper, you can see, 'Wow, this is going to be amazing', but until it's actually transformed onto the screen, you don't know."
Bowman also revealed that he would like his character Daniel to become more "savvy" and follow in the footsteps of his business mogul father Conrad (Henry Czerny).

"He's been spoon-fed for most of his life," the star suggested. "For people to believe that, you've got to make him intelligent and unpredictable.
"He's been somewhat clueless for most of the first season - we haven't found exactly where he's going. Now I think he's more rooted, so that'll be believable, and that for me is the most important thing."
Revenge will return for a second season this fall on ABC. In the UK, the series airs on Channel 4 on Mondays at 9pm.
