E4's latest US import Revenge could well be the answer. The series has been the surprise hit of the season for ABC in the US, earning a hardcore fanbase thanks to its mixture of soapy twists and turns, sunshine and bad guys, and lots and lots of incredible hair.
The show centres on the beautiful Emily Thorne, who has arrived in the Hamptons for the summer. Except she isn't really called Emily Thorne. And she isn't here to top up her tan and clink glasses with the Hamptons-rati. She's *insert hair swishing motion and wide-eyed over-acting* out for revenge.
Played by the stunning Emily VanCamp, Emily (formerly Amanda) wants vengeance for her father who she was separated from as a child and who was betrayed by many people in the Hamptons. Most notably, the deliciously dark Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), who Emily/Amanda holds the biggest grudge against when it comes to the downfall of her dad.
Throw in a selection of handsome men, an internet millionaire, a cheating husband, lashings of affairs and romantic rivalries and you've got a splendid frothy TV cocktail.
The combination of VanCamp and Stowe raises the show above your average sunshine and sexy people US series and while some of the character tropes are on the predictable side, it veers just the right side of soapy, bubbling with tension rather than a whiff of cheesiness.
We're fairly certain Revenge is going to take us down many an unbelievable plot twist. We're fairly certain that Victoria Grayson will end up becoming one of the most ridiculous TV villains of all time. And we're fairly certain we'll never see a hair out of place or a cheekbone that isn't chiselled across the whole season.
But more importantly, we're 100% sure we're going to love everything about Revenge and no matter how daft it gets, we'll be tuning in with a cocktail (or two) every week.
Revenge continues on E4 on Monday nights.
