Smash's executive producer David Marshall Grant has hinted that there are still twists to come in the show.

In last night's episode, Ivy (Megan Hilty) was handed the lead role of Marilyn Monroe instead of Karen (Katharine McPhee).

However, Grant has now suggested that showbusiness is "mercurial and unpredictable" and hinted that things could change in episodes to come.

"One of the great things that we've found while doing this is that [the role of] Marilyn becomes a bit of a revolving door - one that maybe even more than two people enter," he told TV Line.

"Who really ends up with this part is a question that is much more complicated than what we think it is at the end of the second episode."

Grant also hinted that Uma Thurman, who has signed up for an arc in the show, could be a contender for the role of Marilyn, saying: "She's going to be a part of the dynamic."

Smash airs on Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
