The couple were about to run away together in yesterday's (May 10) episode when slain villain Klaus (Joseph Morgan) took over Tyler's body.
"I would've liked to [have seen] how the relationship with Caroline would blossom without the distraction of other people," Trevino told TV Guide. "If nobody was getting in the way, and how deep their relationship could get and if it would last."
Though disheartened, Trevino also said that he is thankful Tyler was allowed to develop over the course of Vampire Diaries.
"I was really nonexistent in season one," he recalled. "Tyler was really one-note, a jerk, and an alpha male douchebag - it was boring and I was frustrated.
"To see how fast Tyler's arc has progressed from seasons two and three... I like the way things went and that he grew up."
Trevino claimed prior to the Vampire Diaries finale that Klaus wouldn't be returning "any time soon".
