The actor confirmed to IGN that his serial killer character will contemplate issues of faith and spirituality as he continues to raise young son Harrison.
Hall explained: "[Dexter is] taking responsibility for the fact that his son needs more than to be shielded from [his] dark passenger. He also will need something positive [to hold on to].
"It's an awareness that his son may have an appetite for those things... that brings [Dexter] to an appreciation that it's something he might want to explore."
Hall added that Dexter's relationship with faith and religion "characterises" the show's sixth run, saying: "I think all the characters in one way or the other will serve to move [Dexter] along in his path."
He also revealed that "conversations are happening" regarding the long-term future of Dexter.
"It's hard for me to think that this will be our last [season]," he said. "Beyond that, it's hard to say."
Dexter will return to Showtime on October 2.
