Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has suggested that the show was axed last year for having "lost its way".

The actress conceded that viewers may have been put off by teething problems brought about by conflicting visions for the ABC sitcom.

"By the second series we'd begun to hit a few bumps in the road," she told the Daily Mail. "It seemed as if everyone had a different vision for the show.

"There were too many cooks. Some of the stories didn't gel and the whole ethos of the show lost its way a little. A lot of viewers switched off. By series three we were back in our stride but many viewers never came back, so the network pulled the plug."

However, Ferrera insisted that she was still proud of Ugly Betty and its unique message.

She said: "[Ugly Betty] defied the old showbusiness belief that looks are everything by proving that they aren't... Betty was nothing like the usual TV heroine. She wasn't conventionally beautiful but her inner beauty and decency shone through, which must have been a first for American network TV."

Ferrera has previously called for an Ugly Betty movie to be made.
