'Gossip Girl': 'Crazy, Cupid, Love' recap

By
Season 5, episode 15

Gossip Girl loves a holiday, and Valentine's Day must be its favourite - what opportunities for romance and heartbreak! It's unsurprising that 'Crazy, Cupid, Love' got in on the act with an instalment all about the heart.

What's even better is that it was largely centred around Dan and Blair. I know that some fans would have hated that, but I maintain that their relationship and dynamic is one of the most interesting on the show.

Things are never that easy on Gossip Girl, though, so we had to get some double crossing and manipulation. Blair still apparently has no idea about Dan's feelings (though how that's possible I don't know), so she tries to set him up with Serena.

That makes things very awkward indeed when later Blair figures out that Dan's not too interested in his ex and asks what would make him happy - leading to a fantastic kiss. Unfortunately, Serena just happens to walk in at that moment.

It's all been set up by the magnificent Georgina, who's got wind of Blair's prenup and wants to make her pay. She even got Blair to the party by blackmailing Dan, warning that she'd reveal he leaked the Chuck-Blair video if he didn't get her there - causing even more problems as Dan pretended to like Serena after all in an attempt to get Blair to go.

This naturally leads to all kinds of repercussions - Serena and Blair fight, for one thing. I do like watching the girls' relationship, and I love the fact that it was done to the backdrop of a high school party, because really nothing has changed since they were teenagers.

More importantly, Dan knows that Georgina won't release the photo she took of the kiss as he's discovered that she's working as Gossip Girl and he now has blackmail material too. But when Georgina tells him about Blair's prenup, he goes outside to confront her and discovers that her marriage to Louis is purely business.

But he's sure that Blair was kissing him back and asks her... and all she says is that it doesn't matter, because she must be with Louis and wouldn't hurt Serena. In other words, her heart is with Dan! A pretty big revelation, there (though, of course, her heart is also with Chuck).

Speaking of Chuck, he's devastated when Georgina shows him the photo and ends up sleeping with Dan's agent Allesandra - which surely isn't good news for our budding author. Otherwise, Georgina decides not to use the picture in the expectation that now Dan and Blair know they have feelings for each other, they'll be doing something much naughtier soon. What a manipulative, horrible person - I love her.

As if that wasn't enough drama, Ivy returns to the Upper East Side in an attempt to speak to Lily - it seems that CeCe is really very ill. But naturally she ends up running into Lola, and when Nate tells Lola that Ivy's name is really Charlotte Rhodes, it all gets very confusing indeed... leading to Lola adding Ivy/Charlie on Facebook. Got it? Looks like this might cause some problems...

So I know that Chuck-Blair fans won't have enjoyed this episode - the stunning, lingering glance when they bumped into each other aside - but for us neutrals or Dan-Blair advocates, it was another very entertaining instalment with Gossip Girl's typical flair for double crossing, manipulation and misunderstandings. What's more, it moved the story forward in a big way - I can't wait to see what's next!

Gossip
  • Blair's awful 'royal aide'/stalker has a thing for Louis. Okay, so she's not going to be trying to break up Blair and Louis at all, then. Uh oh!
  • I wish Nate would stop pining after every girl that crosses his path. I know that he needs to like Lola so we can keep bumping into her, but I wish there had been another way to introduce her.
  • I love that Nate's Spectator party was high-school themed in a totally shameless attempt to put grown men and women into school uniforms. Cheeky.
  • Also, I'm kind of with Lola. Blackmailing her boss to get her number? Nate, that is creepy.
  • Serena's little anti-Valentine's Day chat with Chuck was surprisingly sweet.
  • Blair makes up with Serena. "[Our misdemeanours] cancel each other out! Well, yours was way worse because I only needed a ride. The point is..."
  • I love Blair when she has a scheme. Like when she went incognito in the restaurant where Serena and Dan had their "date". Poor, long-suffering Dorota, though.
  • "Gossip Girl's a shell of her former self, like AOL or Courtney Love."
  • Dan is a "hirsute hand grenade". Oh, Georgina. (See also: "I knew I married you for a reason. Besides your money." And her amazing: "Not it" when Milo began crying, and the preceding moment when she reluctantly agreed to have sex with her husband. She's pure entertainment.)
  • Dorota said "Derena"!
  • Blair's "thank God" when her phone interrupted Dorota's first-love nostalgia was amazing. (I am disappointed we didn't get to see Dorota in school uniform, though.)
  • The little Blair-Dan moment before the kiss ("You think I've been wonderful?") was sweet on so many levels. I have to mention Blair calling Dan "cute" when she thinks he's nervous.
  • Dan discovering Georgina was Gossip Girl was brilliant. "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!" Dan texts Gossip Girl. "Agh!"
