Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Perry explained that she simply cannot commit the time to a television show like American Idol.
"People have reached out to me about the possibility of being involved, and it's not right for me yet," the 'Wide Awake' singer said. "It's a real commitment to be on one of those shows… I have ideas for two or three big, creative things, and I want to be able to fulfil those ideas."
Perry went on to say that she hopes American Idol bosses select experienced musicians if a change is made to the judging panel.
"I find it completely hilarious when they hire people that are not current in music and haven't been for a decade or longer. Or if they're not even in music," the star commented.
"How are you going to give a perspective when you haven't even lived that perspective?"

Adam Lambert - who has also been linked to judging American Idol - recently told Digital Spy he'd love the job.
"If I was asked to do it, I would be thrilled to," Lambert declared.
American Idol returns to Fox in 2013, with open auditions currently underway across the US.
