Hope Solo has become the ninth celebrity to leave Dancing with the Stars.

The professional soccer player and her professional partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were in jeopardy of going home alongside JR Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff on Tuesday night's live results show, though host Tom Bergeron clarified that the couples were not necessarily the bottom two.

Solo said following her elimination: "This competition is one of the toughest competitions I've ever been a part of. I'm grateful, it was an amazing opportunity. There's so many people to thank - my dear friends, my family.

"We have the most amazing fanbase. I'm going to go back and instead of trying to win a mirrorball trophy, I'm going to try to win a gold medal this summer at the Olympics."

Chmerkovskiy added: "Thank you for your determination, will and everything else, and I'm sorry. I wish I could have been better for you, but it is what it is. It was an amazing journey."

Solo had scored 49 out of a total 70 points for the combination of her three performances, with Len Goodman claiming that he "wasn't disappointed" by her Argentine tango. Meanwhile, Bruno Tonioli appreciated the "attitude and aggression" of her paso doble, but thought that she sacrificed grace and fluidity because of it.

Martinez had scored 56 out of 70 possible points for his performances, all of which were affected by his painful ankle injury. Tonioli appreciated his "strong and fearless" Argentine tango, while Carrie Ann Inaba expressed frustration with how the injury affected his posture during the paso doble.

The couples proceeding to next week's finals alongside Martinez and Smirnoff are Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke and Ricki Lake and Derek Hough.

Tonight's results show featured a performance from Cobra Starship with their hit single 'You Make Me Feel'. The Muppets also made a special appearance to sing a song from their upcoming live-action film.

The broadcast also saw the results of the Macy's 'Design-A-Dance' competition, featuring Amanda Wolf's winning garments worn by Derek Hough and Anna Trebunskaya, who danced to Lady GaGa's 'Bad Romance'.

Additionally, the AT&T Spotlight performance saw male dancers from The Gold School take to the floor with four of the show's female dancers.

Dancing with the Stars airs on ABC.
